Despu&eacute;s del 11-S, Kar&iacute;mov se convirti&oacute; en aliado clave del presidente George W. Bush en la zona y permiti&oacute; al Pent&aacute;gono el uso de su principal base militar para la guerra en Afganist&aacute;n. Washington obvia la falta de democracia y las violaciones de los derechos humanos. Kar&iacute;mov ha emprendido una lucha contra los extremistas religiosos que desean acabar con su r&eacute;gimen, encarcelando a miles.</p>\r\n<h3>En busca de la identidad</h3>\r\n<p>A partir de los noventa, los nuevos pa&iacute;ses que surgieron del desmoronamiento de la URSS comenzaron a vivir un agitado periodo de autoidentificaci&oacute;n nacional en que se activ&oacute; el factor religioso. Tradicionalmente musulmanes, surgieron en Uzbekist&aacute;n una serie de grupos fundamentalistas, como Akromia, Adolat (Justicia), Islom Lashkarlari (Soldados del Islam), Tablij (Sociedad para la Divulgaci&oacute;n de la Fe), Touba (Arrepentimiento) y Nur (Luz), muy activos en el valle de Fergan&aacute;. Su objetivo es la creaci&oacute;n de un Estado isl&aacute;mico teocr&aacute;tico, un nuevo califato.</p>\r\n<p>Superpoblado, este valle donde viven unos siete millones de personas, est&aacute; dividido entre Kirguizist&aacute;n, Uzbekist&aacute;n y Tayikist&aacute;n y es un aut&eacute;ntico volc&aacute;n con erupciones peri&oacute;dicas. La revoluci&oacute;n kirguiza de los tulipanes, en marzo, comenz&oacute; en ese valle, en Jalalabad y Osh. La tradicional influencia isl&aacute;mica en el valle se ve reforzada por la miseria y por la explosi&oacute;n demogr&aacute;fica; los j&oacute;venes son presa f&aacute;cil de los fundamentalistas.</p>\r\n<p>Los radicales uzbekos han utilizado el terrorismo en varias ocasiones. El m&aacute;s extremista es el Movimiento Isl&aacute;mico de Uzbekist&aacute;n, que aboga por la v&iacute;a armada para instaurar un Gobierno que se rija por la ley musulmana.
