En teor&iacute;a, podr&iacute;a favorecer la adopci&oacute;n de pol&iacute;ticas progresistas, pero en la pr&aacute;ctica est&aacute; apuntalando un nacionalismo econ&oacute;mico regresivo. Y muchos confiaban en que la libertad comercial impulsara las libertades democr&aacute;ticas, pero parece que las est&aacute; socavando.</p>\r\n<div id=\"elpais_gpt-INTEXT\" data-google-query-id=\"CLG2yrvpodUCFYqnUQodJHgCkw\">\r\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_/7811748/elpais_web/opinion/intext_0__container__\"><iframe id=\"google_ads_iframe_/7811748/elpais_web/opinion/intext_0\" title=\"3rd party ad content\" name=\"google_ads_iframe_/7811748/elpais_web/opinion/intext_0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" data-integralas-id-dbb88032-79c3-e781-ad95-174e626e4eca=\"\"></iframe></div>\r\n</div>\r\n<p>Al principio, se crey&oacute; que los Gobiernos, a cambio de exponer a trabajadores y empresas a la competencia internacional, montar&iacute;an sistemas sofisticados de protecci&oacute;n social. Pero, por el contrario, hoy la globalizaci&oacute;n es utilizada por muchos Gobiernos como justificaci&oacute;n para su inacci&oacute;n. Si ampliamos las pol&iacute;ticas sociales, dicen, el pa&iacute;s perder&aacute; competitividad. Por ello, los trabajadores de las econom&iacute;as m&aacute;s globalizadas han abandonado a sus defensores tradicionales &mdash;sobre todo, los socialdem&oacute;cratas&mdash; por nuevos partidos que prometen la que parece la &uacute;nica alternativa pol&iacute;tica en estos momentos: el nacionalismo proteccionista.</p>\r\n<p>La globalizaci&oacute;n tambi&eacute;n est&aacute; minando la legitimidad de los sistemas democr&aacute;ticos. La iron&iacute;a es que, a nivel agregado, la exposici&oacute;n a los intercambios globales lleva a una mayor satisfacci&oacute;n ciudadana con la democracia; pero, cuando miramos los datos con lupa, lo que emerge es una creciente fractura dentro de cada pa&iacute;s. Aquellos ciudadanos que se consideran ganadores de la globalizaci&oacute;n tienen unos valores cada vez m&aacute;s democr&aacute;ticos y tolerantes. Y aquellos que se sienten perdedores adoptan posturas m&aacute;s tradicionales y autoritarias.</p>\r\n<p>La globalizaci&oacute;n se ha convertido en un monstruo &uacute;til para todos. Quienes rigen el destino de un pa&iacute;s encuentran conveniente azuzar el miedo a un drag&oacute;n terrible que nos devorar&aacute; a todos si no le entregamos a las doncellas &mdash;o a los trabajadores industriales&mdash; del lugar.
