Un millar de manifestantes bloquearon ayer los accesos al puerto y la refinería de Sohar, la tercera ciudad de Omán, para reclamar reformas políticas, puestos de trabajo y mejores salarios. La protesta, que se repetía por tercer día consecutivo, alcanzó también a la capital, Mascat, donde un centenar de personas se concentraron ante la sede del Consejo Consultivo pidiendo el cese de la violencia contra los ciudadanos en Sohar, donde la intervención policial dejó al menos dos muertos el domingo.
\r\n\"Queremos ver el beneficio de nuestro petróleo distribuido de forma equitativa entre la población\", clamaba a través de un altavoz uno de los manifestantes de Sohar, según la agencia Reuters. Mientras, decenas de personas saqueaban un hipermercado cercano que fue incendiado el día anterior, junto a la comisaría, otros dos edificios oficiales y varios vehículos.
\r\n\r\nLas concesiones realizadas por el sultán omaní no calman el malestar
\r\nAunque la concentración impedía el paso de los camiones al puerto y la zona industrial, una portavoz de la refinería aseguró que la exportación no se había visto afectada. Omán extrae una media de 850.000 barriles diarios de petróleo, de los que exporta 584.000. Las fuerzas de seguridad instalaron controles en todas las carreteras de acceso a Sohar, una ciudad de 100.000 habitantes, para aislar la protesta e impedir que se sumaran otros descontentos. A la vez se anunciaba que una delegación de alto nivel iba a trasladarse desde Mascat para reunirse con los manifestantes.
\r\nDe momento, estos no cuestionan al sultán Qabús, que desde hace 40 años dirige el país con poder absoluto. Sin embargo, los esfuerzos que ha desplegado para atajar su malestar tampoco dan resultado. Nada más conocerse los incidentes del domingo en Sohar, el monarca ordenó la creación de 50.000 puestos de trabajo en la Administración pública, un subsidio de 150 riales (300 euros) para quienes busquen empleo, planes para dar más poder al Consejo Consultivo, que se elige por sufragio universal, pero sin capacidad legislativa, y la liberación de los detenidos en las manifestaciones. La protesta continúa.
\r\n\"Domingo negro en Sohar\", se atrevió a titular el Muscat Daily, el único periódico independiente del sultanato, propiedad del importante grupo editorial Apex. El resto de los medios de comunicación repetían la información de la agencia oficial de noticias, según la cual los manifestantes \"atacaron a los policías\", que \"se vieron obligados a defenderse, lo que ocasionó heridos\". El Muscat Daily cita a un portavoz policial que establece en dos muertos y 35 heridos el resultado de los enfrentamientos del domingo, revalidando la cifra adelantada por las agencias internacionales. Reuters recogió ayer el testimonio de un médico sin identificar que elevaba a seis los muertos. A su vez, el ministro omaní de Sanidad aseguró que había un muerto y 20 heridos.
\r\nEl diario, que dirige el liberal Saleh Zaquani, ilustró la noticia en portada con una foto de la rotonda de la Bola del Mundo, en la que se ven dos columnas de humo negro de los edificios incendiados el día anterior, así como varias señales de tráfico vandalizadas. Su corresponsal en Sohar estimó entre 1.500 y 2.000 los participantes en las protestas.
\r\nMientras tanto, al oeste de Omán sigue aumentando la presión para que Ali Abdalá Saleh renuncie a la presidencia de Yemen. Decenas de miles de yemeníes volvieron a manifestarse ayer en todo el país al grito de \"No al diálogo, no al diálogo. La única opción es que te vayas\". Atento al mensaje de la calle, el Foro Común, que agrupa a los partidos de oposición, rechazó la invitación de Saleh para formar un Gobierno de unidad nacional, algo que al principio de las protestas les hubiera satisfecho. Pero a medida que la movilización por el cambio ha ido ampliando su base social y geográfica, los partidos han contemporizado.
\r\nDurante una reunión en el palacio presidencial, Saleh aseguró a una representación de ulemas que anunciaría un Gobierno de unidad nacional en 24 horas, según la cadena Al Yazira. El líder yemení les dijo que si la oposición no aceptaba participar, invitaría a figuras independientes y que el nuevo Ejecutivo sentaría las bases para las reformas constitucionales. Pero sus buenas intenciones llegan demasiado tarde.
\r\nLos opositores han convocado a un Día de la Ira hoy, y 13 diputados de Aden y Hadramaut han dimitido como rechazo a la represión de las protestas en esas provincias del sur y el este del país. También exigen la liberación de los presos políticos.
