Obligado a ser consecuente con su política de promoción de la democracia en Oriente Próximo, Estados Unidos pidió ayer contención y reformas al Gobierno de Bahréin, sede de la V Flota norteamericana y uno de los más estrechos y sensibles aliados en la región. La Casa Blanca aseguró que su política respecto a las protestas en Bahréin y en otros países árabes será \"reflejo\" de la que sostuvo en el caso de Egipto: \"No dictamos las soluciones, pero defendemos nuestros valores\".

\"Creemos firmemente que la violencia no es la respuesta apropiada contra gente que expresa pacíficamente sus legítimas reclamaciones y deseos de participar en el proceso político\", declaró el portavoz de la presidencia norteamericana, Jay Carney, aludiendo a la actuación del Ejército de Bahréin contra los manifestantes en la capital del país, Manama.

La secretaria de Estado, Hillary Clinton, telefoneó ayer al ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Bahréin, jeque Jaled bin Ahmed al Califa, para \"expresarle la profunda preocupación por los recientes acontecimientos y urgirle a mantener contención\", según ella misma informó.

\r\n

Barack Obama no se había puesto en contacto aún con representantes del Gobierno del reino ni había previsto ninguna declaración suya sobre el tema. El Pentágono se limitó a comentar que seguía de cerca los acontecimientos en ese pequeño y estratégico país, situado en el punto neurálgico de las mayores reservas de petróleo del mundo.

\r\n

La crisis del reino es una prueba mayúscula sobre la sinceridad de la política norteamericana en la región. Aunque no tiene el significado histórico ni el peso político de Egipto, Bahréin es un pilar para la protección de la seguridad en Oriente Próximo y de los intereses de EE UU en la zona.

\r\n

Además de ser el albergue de la V Flota norteamericana que vigila el Golfo y el estrecho de Ormuz, la concentración militar en Bahréin, donde se reúnen varias fuerzas navales que patrullan el Índico, con submarinos y portaaviones incluidos, ha sido decisiva en las dos guerras contra Irak y sería vital ahora en el caso de una confrontación con Irán.

\r\n

Como demostraron los documentos del Departamento de Estado obtenidos por Wikileaks, Bahréin es el punto central en el seguimiento de la situación política en el vecino régimen islámico. Esos papeles pusieron también en evidencia otra condición esencial de ese pequeño reino: la lealtad de su casa real. Ha sido el rey de Bahréin quien con más énfasis ha defendido en los últimos años la necesidad de acabar con el programa nuclear iraní, aunque sea mediante el uso de la fuerza.

\r\n

Para Washington, además, Bahréin, donde la familia dirigente conduce un régimen autocrático blando que se ha permitido en el pasado una cierta apertura democrática, era un ejemplo de cómo se podía liberalizar Oriente Próximo. En diciembre de 2010, durante una visita a Manama, Hillary Clinton se manifestó \"impresionada por el compromiso que el Gobierno de Bahréin tiene con la vía democrática\".

\r\n

Ese aperturismo suena hoy raquítico ante los nuevos estándares democráticos marcados por Egipto y reclamados ya por la población del reino, entre otros muchos países árabes. EE UU se ve por tanto ante el reto de apoyar las protestas con riesgo de desestabilizar el régimen que da acogida a su fuerza militar en el Golfo o respaldar a ese régimen y convertir en papel mojado todas las promesas de democracia hechas por Obama en los últimos días.

\r\n

Esto último es inconcebible. Obama está condenado a aplicar su propia doctrina en Oriente Próximo. Si lo que es verdad para Egipto tiene que ser verdad en Irán, como dijo el martes, también tiene que ser verdad en Bahréin, en Jordania y quién sabe si algún día en Arabia Saudí.

\r\n

De momento, Washington está manejando este punto de la crisis con especial prudencia. El portavoz de la Casa Blanca se negó ayer a repetir para Bahréin el llamamiento a una transición pacífica que se hizo para Egipto. El régimen de Bahréin, según los expertos, parece tener más flexibilidad que Hosni Mubarak para una evolución democrática sin ruptura. Probablemente ese sea el camino que busque Obama antes de un pronunciamiento más claro. La última palabra, en todo caso, la van a tener los manifestantes de Bahréin. En el mundo árabe hoy, la iniciativa la tiene el pueblo.
