Una cat&aacute;strofe porque desaparec&iacute;a el Estado al que &eacute;l representaba como embajador, y un golpe de suerte porque le ha permitido estar con su mujer actual, la espa&ntilde;ola Mercedes &Aacute;lvarez. La pareja se hab&iacute;a conocido en una conferencia en Madrid en la que ella trabajaba como int&eacute;rprete. Pero &Aacute;lvarez, una ni&ntilde;a de la guerra que hab&iacute;a pasado la infancia en la Uni&oacute;n Sovi&eacute;tica, no estaba dispuesta a trasladarse de nuevo al otro lado del tel&oacute;n de acero. &ldquo;Les dec&iacute;a a mis amigas que si &eacute;l fuera alem&aacute;n occidental podr&iacute;amos estar juntos sin problemas. Pero que siendo del Este era imposible&rdquo;, recuerda en el sal&oacute;n de su apartamento. El Muro cay&oacute; y en 1990 ya estaban viviendo juntos en el Berl&iacute;n sin fronteras. Las elecciones que se celebraron en marzo de ese a&ntilde;o ya demostraron que el r&eacute;gimen para el que trabajaba Steglich estaba condenado a la disoluci&oacute;n. Con la integraci&oacute;n en la RFA, su puesto de diplom&aacute;tico desapareci&oacute; de la noche a la ma&ntilde;ana y pas&oacute; a la jubilaci&oacute;n forzosa. &ldquo;Para m&iacute; fue una pena, pero con el tiempo ha quedado claro que la gente quer&iacute;a otra cosa. No habr&iacute;a tenido sentido mantener ese pa&iacute;s artificialmente&rdquo;. &iquest;A&ntilde;ora la RDA? &ldquo;No. Lo que exist&iacute;a no lo echo de menos. Astrid Landero comenz&oacute; 1989 con miedo en el cuerpo. Ve&iacute;a que la situaci&oacute;n era insostenible y anot&oacute; esta frase en su diario el 1 de enero. Esta periodista que entonces trabajaba para la radio de la RDA y ahora dirige un centro para mujeres confiaba en que las nuevas generaciones limpiar&iacute;an el sistema. &ldquo;No quer&iacute;amos destruirlo, sino mejorarlo. Cre&iacute;amos que la soluci&oacute;n era una confederaci&oacute;n entre las dos Alemanias y no una uni&oacute;n inmediata. No nos d&aacute;bamos cuenta de que el sistema ya estaba muerto&rdquo;.</p>\r\n<p>Seg&uacute;n como se mire, Landero podr&iacute;a considerarse como una de las perdedoras del cambio. Pas&oacute; de tener un trabajo fijo y poder viajar con relativa facilidad gracias a su condici&oacute;n de periodista a entrar de lleno en el capitalismo, con sus glorias y miserias. Desde entonces ha encadenado &eacute;pocas de desempleo con trabajos improvisados de aut&oacute;noma. Pero ella est&aacute; contenta. &ldquo;La idea de seguridad que nos vendieron en la RDA era una gran mentira. Adem&aacute;s, la incertidumbre me hace sentir viva. A mis 60 a&ntilde;os, acabo de hacer un curso para trabajar como gu&iacute;a tur&iacute;stica. He descubierto talentos en m&iacute; que no pensaba que tuviera&rdquo;, concluye.</p>\r\n<span class=\"foto-firma\"><span class=\"foto-firma\"><span class=\"foto-autor\"><span class=\"foto-firma\"><span class=\"foto-autor\">JULIA SOLER</span></span><br /><br /><span class=\"foto-titulo\">Promesas del este&nbsp;</span></span></span></span>\r\n<p><strong>Dagmar Enkelmann</strong></p>\r\n<p><em>Presidenta de la Fundaci&oacute;n Rosa Luxemburgo</em></p>\r\n<p>En el cartel con el que se present&oacute; a las elecciones de 1990, Dagmar Enkelmann aparec&iacute;a con sus hijos peque&ntilde;os. &ldquo;Hoy no lo har&iacute;a, pero eran los primeros comicios y no sab&iacute;amos qu&eacute; deb&iacute;amos hacer&rdquo;, asegura esta mujer que militaba en el Partido Socialista Unificado &ndash;el que acapar&oacute; el poder durante 40 a&ntilde;os en la RDA&ndash; y luego sali&oacute; elegida diputada por su heredero, el Partido del Socialismo Democr&aacute;tico.</p>\r\n<p>Pasaron casi dos meses desde la ca&iacute;da del Muro hasta que la hoy presidenta de la Fundaci&oacute;n Rosa Luxemburgo se decidiera a cruzar al otro lado. &ldquo;Me daba miedo de que cerraran las fronteras de repente y no me dejaran volver. Ten&iacute;a claro que quer&iacute;a quedarme en el Este&rdquo;, explica.</p>\r\n<p>Enkelmann recuerda con emoci&oacute;n la multitud de discusiones y reuniones pol&iacute;ticas en las que particip&oacute; en los meses anteriores al derrumbamiento del r&eacute;gimen. &ldquo;Sobre el papel de las mujeres, sobre la cultura&hellip; habl&aacute;bamos de todo. Pero en ese momento nadie pensaba en la reunificaci&oacute;n. No era tema de discusi&oacute;n. En diciembre de 1989 esto empez&oacute; a cambiar&rdquo;, recuerda. Y 25 a&ntilde;os m&aacute;s tarde, &iquest;qu&eacute; opinan las nuevas generaciones? &ldquo;Todo ha cambiado mucho.
