Se creaba la primera brecha en el llamado Telón de Acero.\r\nAl éxodo de la población se le unió pronto una oleada de manifestaciones a lo largo de toda Alemania Oriental. El líder de la RDA, Eric Honnecker, se planteó una solución represiva. Pero las imágenes de la masacre de Tiananmen estaban muy recientes y Gorbachov no estaba dispuesto a permitirlo. Era el momento del cambio.\r\n\r\nLos ministros de Exteriores de Austria, Alois Mock (izquierda), y Hungría, Gyula Horn (derecha), cortan el alambre de espino que separa los dos países, creando la primera brecha en el llamado Telón de Acero./ Efe\r\n\r\nEn los días siguientes los hechos se sucedieron. El 23 de octubre, tras la declaración en Budapest de Hungría  como república soberana independiente, Eduard Shevarnadze propuso que la URRS no interviniese en los asuntos de la Europa Oriental. Ese mismo día, el portavoz de Gorbachov, Gennadii Gerasimov, anunció que la Doctrina Breznev  había sido sustituida por la Doctrina Sinatra. Con ella se venía a proclamar que el Kremlin ratificaba los cambios en Polonia y Hungría, y animaba a los demás países a seguir adelante. Dos días después, el  25 de octubre, Gorbachov condenó duramente la Doctrina Breznev durante un viaje a Finlandia.\r\n\r\nHonnecker fue sustituido por un comunista reformista, Egon Krenz, que decidió abrir el Muro de Berlín el 9 de noviembre de 1989. Tras el derrumbamiento de la RDA, se abrió un proceso de negociación entre las cuatro potencias vencedoras de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la RFA. El acuerdo 4+2 posibilitó finalmente el 3 de octubre de 1990 la reunificación de Alemania.
