Cuando la policía va a interrogar aManuel, el padre intenta sobornarles, cosa que no aceptan. Exige también que presenten una orden judicial, no dejando que suhijo vaya a declarar voluntariamente a comisaría. El padre muestra su disgusto a su hijo, mientras le dice que en Chile no habríapodido ayudarle porque no hay garantías.Los suecos miran mal al padre cuando se quita la camiseta en un parque, como también miran mal los padres de Lena aManuel cuando va a su casa. De pequeño Manuel se peleó con un compañero de clase que le llamó cabeza negra. Haycomportamientos disruptivos en clase y fuera tienen una banda multirracial que pasa el día robando, drogándose y bebiendo paramatar el aburrimiento. En muchas de estas situaciones, como en la vida real, es difícil decir que vino antes.El padre, exiliado, no encuentra un empleo acorde con su cualificación, por lo que vive de subsidios, a la vez que barajaen su interior la posibilidad de volver a Chile, pero no lo hace primero por la represión de la dictadura y después porque laeconomía en Chile está mal y sus antiguos compañeros de militancia ya se han colocado y no admiten a más gente.La madre trabaja 10 años limpiando unos grandes almacenes y pierde un subsidio por no saber que había que pagarcuotas al sindicato. El hermano mayor de Manuel tiene un empleo temporal y estudia, por lo que reprocha a Manuel que no haganada, mientras que Manuel le replica que realmente vive de la vieja con la que estáTodo el que puede se va del suburbio o “guetto”. Lena, como pasa mucho en la vida real, va con una banda deextranjeros por ganas de marcha, pero llegando a determinada edad lo deja para llevar una vida estable.Vemos el desencanto político en el padre y en el profesor de la escuela pública, el cual se queja de que se estádesintegrando el Estado de bienestar sueco, frente al libre mercado, la corrupción y el crecimiento sostenido. Debe jubilarse singanas de hacerlo, y vive aburrido por la muerte de su mujer y porque a sus hijos apenas los ve. Se lamenta de que no ha podidosalvar a sus alumnos de los suburbios. En la televisión la familia ve el asesinato del presidente del gobierno socialdemócrata OlofPalme. El profesor también protestará contra la sentencia en el juicio, diciendo que Suecia dio a los jóvenes juzgado comida ytecho pero no una oportunidad.Manuel, nacido y educado en Suecia, acaba peleado con su amigo por el amor de Lena, la cual acaba dejando a Manuelle ingresan unos meses en un correccional.
