En\nEspaña, como en muchas otras regiones vecinas, la conquista de la democracia fue tardía y problemática, no exenta de una fuerte\npolarización y un alto grado de violencia política. El siglo XX español también culminó con la conquista de la libertad y la\ndemocracia, pero más tarde que en otras partes y tras un camino traumático. Este artículo analiza las bases intelectuales sobre las\nque se compatibilizaron libertad y participación tras el final de la dictadura de Franco. Se estudia la cultura política de los\nprincipales actores y se sostiene que, al igual que en otros contextos de la posguerra europea de los años cuarenta, la política de la\nlibertad estuvo precedida de una aproximación de las culturas políticas de las elites, derivada de un análisis crítico del pasado\nreciente.
