Las dos islas principales, East Falkland [Malvina Oriental, o Soledad] y West Falkland [Malvina Occidental, o Gran Malvina], están a 300 millas [480 km] al este de la costa argentina. Unas 200 islas menores conforman una superficie terrestre total de aproximadamente 4.700 millas cuadradas [12.200 km2]. La capital y única población importante es Puerto Stanley.\r\nEl gobierno de las Falkland Islands administra las dependencias británicas de las islas Georgias del Sur, Sandwich del Sur, y los peñones Shag y Clerke, que están entre 700 y 2.000 millas (1.100 to 3.200 km) al este y sudeste de las Falkland/Malvinas. La población total de las islas en el año 1991 fue estimada en 2100.\r\n Argentina ha reclamado soberanía sobre las islas desde 1820.
